From the Porsche crisis to a sought-after collector’s item
In the 1990s, the Porsche brand was confronted with severe economic problems.
Porsche’s sales figures fell to an unprecedented low. One of the main reasons was the sharp drop in the dollar exchange rate and the resulting decline in the number of vehicles sold worldwide.
In addition, the pressure on the company founded by Ferdinand Porsche increased as the arch enemies Ferrari with the F40, Lamborghini with the Diablo VT, Jaguar with the XJ 220 took over and dominated the market with their super sports cars.
Porsche needed a new flagship model to be competitive again. The Porsche 959 was the company’s flagship at the end of the 80’s but by the beginning of the 90’s it was back to being old hat. The development progressed rapidly and Porsche had a hard time to catch up.
In order to be able to offer something to the competition at that time, it was decided to build the 993 GT2 with the engineers of Weissach to be able to become again somewhat more competitive as a sports car mark.
A chassis from the 993 Turbo served as the basis and Weissach tried to compensate for the 45 hp less than the competition by reducing the weight. Ultimately, the model built between 1995 and 1997 came to a whopping 423 hp with an weight of just 1,280 kg. For comparison, the F40 had a weight of 1,254 kg, the Lamborghini Diablo VT 1,460 kg and Jaguar XJ220 with 1,470 kg. This weight reduction compared to the Lamborghini and Jaguar, had a significant effect on acceleration and handling.
The 993 GT2 thus ushered in a new era where performance was no longer the ultimate.
Only 193 cars were built of this series worldwide in total and only a handful of cars are still in good collector condition. A majority of vehicles were moved at racing events at that time and are no longer suitable as collector’s items due to accident repairs as well as poorly comprehensible curriculum vitae.
With our offered vehicle the history is completely comprehensible and the vehicle was not moved on the race track. In addition, the vehicle is accident-free and in a top – collector condition.
Before delivery to our customers, a 111 point check up report will be done at the Porsche Center. In addition, a current maintenance service according to manufacturer specifications will be performed afterwards.
